KARIM ALAMI: DAL ROLAND GARROS A BIELLA LA STRADA E' BREVE

Nel 1990 aveva chiuso la stagione al 30° posto nel ranking mondiale ma è anche salito fino al 25esimo posto nella Champions Race (febbraio 2000). Ora è fuori dai top 100 ma resta uno dei più forti tennisti marocchini. Si tratta del 28enne Karim Alami, reduce dal Roland Garros dove ha messo paura a Guga Kuerten: "Per un'ora ho giocato alla pari con uno dei più forti specialisti del rosso - dichiara Alami - poi la potenza e la freschezza atletica del brasiliano hanno avuto la meglio. Adesso ho potuto riposarmi qualche giorno in Marocco, spero di riprendere subito confidenza con i match e disputare un buon torneo".
Da dodici anni lei è un protagonista del circuito professionistico: come è cambiato il tennis in questi ultimi anni?
"Il livello medio dei giocatori è cresciuto molto. Ora ci sono tanti giovani preparati fisicamente che tirano molto forte: tennisti come Ferrero, Corretja, Hewitt, lo stesso Kuerten, sono in grado di farti il punto da qualsiasi zona del campo e di restare per ore a macinare gioco. La loro pallina "fila" veloce e per sperare di contrastarli devi sempre essere al top fisicamente."
Attualmente è uscito dai primi 100 giocatori al mondo. Il Fila-Challenger può essere il punto di partenza per un nuovo rilancio?
"Sicuramente ho perso un po' di punti e sono sceso troppo in classifica. Il mio obiettivo adesso è quello di giocare e di risalire la china. Il fisico continua a sostenermi e finché mi divertirò in campo continuerò a girare il mondo e disputare tornei".

Although Karim Alami finished the 1990 season in the 30th place in the world ranking, he achieved the 25th in february 2000. Although at the moment he is out of the top hundred, he is still one of the best Marocian players. Back from the Roland Garros where he was dangerous even for Guga Kuerten, the twenty-eight years old players. Karim Alami, declares that, after an hour of of even good tennis with one of the best clay players, the strength and the atletic freshness of the brasilian players overcame him. Moreover Alami hopes after a few days spent relaxing in Marocco, to reacquiere his confidence with matches and to play a good tournament.
You have been in the professional circuit for the past twelve years: how has tennis changed in the last few years?
"The average level of the players has definetly increased. Now there are many tennis players who are very fit and can shoot really hard: those like Ferrero, Hewitt, Corretja, Kuerten himself, are able to score you a point from every part of the court and keep on for a long time. Their ball runs very fast and in order to contrast them you must always be at your top physical condition".
At the moment you are out of the top hundred ranking. Could the Fila-Challenge be the starting point for a new beginning?
"Surely i have lost some point and slipted back some ranking positions. However, my aim is to play and gain back some of these positions. I feel good and till i am enjoying myself in the court i will continue to travel around the world and take part in tennis tournaments".
